Green-fingered pupils and staff at an Enfield Primary School have been planting a new orchard in a nearby open space.

Pupils from Oakthorpe Primary School in Tile Kiln Lane, Palmers Green, have been helping to plant a new orchard on Kiln Lane Open Space.

The initiative was set up by the London Orchard Project to transform open spaces in the capital by planting fruit trees.

Teacher and co-ordinator of the project at Oakthorpe, Rebecca Rowbury, said: “It was great fun for the children to plant the fruit trees in our nearby open space.

“This is a really important project for the pupils as they will be able to learn about the environment and how to take care of their local area.”

More than 15 pupils from each year group helped in planting seven trees, one for each year.

Ms Rowbury added: “The trees are just one year old at the moment and will need a lot of attention which will benefit the children a lot.

“The area is undergoing a large redevelopment and hopefully the trees we have planted will more the open space much more appealing.”
