A motorist who lied to police investigating a speeding offence has been jailed by magistrates.

Edress Younossi, 31, from Magnet Crescent in Enfield, was sentenced to an immediate three month prison term at Stevenage Magistrates' Court yesterday after admitting perjury.

The original driving offence occurred on July 23, 2013, when a Volkswagen Passat was being driven at more than 40mph and triggered a speed camera on the A10 Great Cambridge Road in Cheshunt.

After being sent a notice of prosecution, Younossi named a man from Holland as the driver of the vehicle at the time of the offence.

Police investigated the matter and Younossi was interviewed by officers. During the interview, he admitted he had lied and, in fact, he had been driving at the time.

PC Bill Owens, who investigated the incident, said: "Speeding is a serious matter and lying about a driving offence is not treated lightly by the courts, as Younossi has found out.

"All speeding offences are investigated and anyone who is found to have deliberately provided false information to police could be facing a spell in prison."
