An MP says there is a desperate need for more affordable housing after house prices in his constituency increased to more than ten times the average salary.

Edmonton MP Andy Love made his comments after figures from the National Housing Federation showed the average salary in the area is £20,634, while the average house price is 10.8 times greater at £223,398.

He said: “We are experiencing an affordable housing crisis – rents and property prices in the capital are going up but wages are staying the same.

“Meanwhile social housing is being sold off and not replaced at anywhere near the speed we need it to be.

“At nearly 11 times the average salary, house prices are completely out of reach for so many people in Edmonton, and private rents are unaffordable too.

“This means that more and more people every day are turning to the state for help, adding another £1.7 million to the very housing benefit bill that the Government is desperately trying to cut.”
