Tributes poured in to a 16-year-old student who was hit by a train in Hertfordshire in February.

Charlie Davis, of Winchmore Hill, died at the scene at approximately 2pm after suffering multiple injuries.

The teenager attended Hertford Regional College, where principal Andy Forbes said: “Charlie, as he liked to be called, was a polite, well spoken and enthusiastic student, who showed a particular interest in his information technology and engineering course.”

Also in February, a 39-year-old school caretaker was charged with two sexual offences against girls aged seven and nine.

The man appeared at Wood Green Crown Court and was later found guilty.

Elsewhere, two pupils at Cuckoo Hall Primary School claimed to have found a man wearing a balaclava in the girls’ toilets.

But executive headteacher Patricia Sowter could find no evidence of the man entering the school.

She said: “Following our very thorough investigation, we can find no substantive proof that this reported event occurred.”

A councillor was suspended following controversial comments on social networking site Facebook.

Finally, Enfield businessman David Mills donated £5,000 to the Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service in Trent Country Park to double the amount raised by Independent readers after the paper launched a campaign to save the charity.
