A primary school teacher has won the opportunity to appear alongside a book-loving puppy in a special episode of children’s television show Bookaboo.

Des Hegarty, who teaches at Wilbury Primary School in Edmonton, won a national competition to find a teacher passionate about sharing stories to feature on the show.

The competition, which was launched in May this year, asked teachers from all over the UK to choose their favourite book to read aloud and submit a video of their performance.

During tomorrow’s episode, Mr Hegarty will read Pigeon Poo by Elizabeth Baguley and Mark Chambers to pupils at his school.

Mr Hegarty said: “I’m so excited to have won, for myself and Wilbury.  The key to the show is the character.  Bookaboo is cool.

“He is a natty little fella with the same outlook as the children he presents to.  He allows children to feel confident to ask questions and have the freedom to join in.”

The BAFTA award-winning show aims to demonstrate the fun of children and parents reading a book together.

The show regularly features celebrity guests reading to Bookaboo, with past stars including Meat Loaf, Al Murray and Melanie C.

Mr Hegarty will feature on the show on ITV and CITV at 7.25am tomorrow.
