Chase Farm Hospital’s accident and emergency ward will close today, marking the end of a decade-long battle to keep it open.
Despite protests, campaigns and a judicial review, the A&E ward at the Enfield hospital in the Ridgeway, will shut its doors today.
The closure of the ward is part of Enfield’s Clinical Commissioning Group’s Barnet, Enfield and Haringey strategy to streamline services at the hospital.
This took place in conjunction with the expansion of services at Barnet Hospital in Wellhouse Lane and North Middlesex University Hospital in Sterling Way, Edmonton.
The ‘Save Chase Farm’ campaign has been led for years by former councillor Kieren McGregor and Kate Wilkinson.
The North East London Council of Action has also been protesting to save the hospital with daily pickets and marches through the town.
Following the final decision at a CCG meeting on September 25, to cut services, Enfield Borough Council launched a legal challenge against the decision.
However, their bid for a judicial review failed at the Royal Courts of Justice on November 12 and condemned the hospital to be downgraded.
