Scrap metal dealers will have to pay more than £1,000 for two licences following recent legislation
Dealers and movers of scrap metal will have to pay more than £1,000 for two licences after recent legislation was passed.
After the Scrap Metal Dealers Acts came into effect on October 1, all dealers must hold a licence to continue trading.
Each valid for three years, site licences will cost £680 and collectors' licences will cost £325.
Renewal costs for the site licence will be £479 and £193 for collectors licences.
The council’s cabinet member for environment Councillor Chris Bond said: “We have the responsibility to licence and inspect scrap metal dealers and the new licence fees are designed to help us cover our costs in doing so.
“We have a very important role to play in tackling metal theft in this borough and the effective licensing of the trade will help us stamp out cowboy traders, build stronger relationships with legal dealers and spot potential suspicious activity where the theft of metal is concerned.”
