Bird calls and the smell of livestock filled the air as hundreds of people gathered in an Enfield garden for a harvest festival.

Capel Manor Gardens, in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield, hosted the 15th City Harvest Festival which featured greens, gherkins, goats and guinea pigs galore.

Representatives from London’s 16 city farms brought sheep, horses, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, rabbits, cows and even a ferret to display to the public.

“I brought her so she could see the animals and get stuck in and she’s really enjoying it.”

More than 100 community gardens also showcased their produce at the event on the 30-acre site.

According to Janice Campling, from Chestunt, the birds of prey display was one of the day’s highlights.

She said: “I think the birds are absolutely beautiful and I can’t believe how tame they are.

“This is the first time I have come to this event but it really good and all the animals are really lovely.”

Some of the exhibitors sold some of the produce they had grown on their farms.

John Palombo, of the Hertfordshire Beekeepers Association, sold some of the honey from his 50 hives.

He said: “We are here to get people more interested in bees and beekeeping.

“Today we have been showing some to the children how to make candles from beeswax and how to extract honey.

“They really love it – they kids are really interested in bees but a lot of them don’t know how they work.”
