Enfield parks can now hold live music plus other events until 11pm after a committee meeting today
Dozens of Enfield parks will now be able to hold entertainment events until 11pm.
Plans for new premises licences in 15 Enfield parks were granted today by an Enfield Borough Council licensing sub-committee, despite strong opposition to events in some of the green spaces.
The decision, by councillors Derek Levy, George Savva and Don Delman, will now allow entertainment such as films, plays and music in any of the parks from 8am until 11pm on any day of the year.
Among 77 opposing the plans at Oakwood Park, Andrew Parsons, of Sheringham Avenue, Southgate said: “I do not consider that the proposal does promote the licence objective, the conditions are wholly inadequate and this is in the middle of a wholly residential area.”
There was also opposition to events at Library Green in Church Street, Enfield Town, which is metres from Enfield Town Park.
Joan Yates of River View, Enfield said: “I am bitterly disappointed by the decision; I don’t see the point in putting events there when you have the Town Park next to it. It is a lovely green space and will be brought down by this decision.”
Outlining the reasons for the decision, sub-committee chairman Derek Levy said: “The panel believes that the applicant has taken all reasonable steps to promote the licensing objectives.
"In making this decision, the licensing sub-committee acknowledges the concerns and reservations of all parties that have made submissions, but we felt that those concerns were largely borne out of speculation, conjecture and assumption and provided insufficient evidence to weight the argument in favour of any other decision.”
