Figures from a financial advice charity show Hertsmere Borough Council has called in bailiffs more than 2,000 times in the past year.

The Money Advice Trust released figures yesterday which revealed the council has referred bailiffs to 2,348 residential properties in the borough - which contains 41,623 houses.

The findings, which were obtained from a Freedom of Information request, were also published for the other 373 local authorities around the country.

In total 1.8 million referrals were made to bailiffs by councils across England and Wales in the last 12 months.

The trust is calling on local authorities to be more responsible in managing their debt collection and to only use bailiffs as a last resort.
