'Cautious support' from MP over hospital merger
Enfield MP Nick De Bois has offered "cautious support" after a report recommended the merger of two major North London hospitals.
Health regulator Monitor last week published its findings on the impact of a merger between Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals with the Royal Free Hospital.
Mr De Bois said: "The report states that a merger between the Royal Free, and Barnet and Chase Farm Hospitals would offer better services that are more financially viable and therefore I give the move cautious support.”
The independent report found that to combine the two hospitals would not restrict competition for services and was ““unlikely to give rise to material costs to patients or taxpayers as a result of a loss of choice or competition”.
Yet the Enfield North MP believes that the patients need to be convinced that the savings will be put back into the system.
He added: "However, everything must be done to convince patients and the public that savings from a merger will be reinvested in frontline care, and we need firm assurances that administrative changes will benefit patients".
