Crystal award for Enfield blood donor
An Enfield woman has been awarded with a special gift for saving lives.
One of 98 blood donors to receive recognition, Martha Pickton from Edmonton collected a crystal award for her loyalty and commitment to blood donation at the awards ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Green Park.
Special guest Simon Cooper, 30 from Cockfosters who is a drummer with pop duo Chas and Dave, spoke of his gratitude to donors.
Mr Cooper received blood during a liver transplant, then received a further ten units of blood, six platelets and four units of plasma during a lung transplant operation
He said: "Without blood donations I would not have been able to have my transplants and would not have survived. It's very important that people give blood, it doesn't take very long and it saves many lives."
Mrs Pickton, whose husband receive a blood transfusion, said: "I was prompted to start giving blood as a unit used to come around the firm where I worked. People need blood and it is nice to help."
Every donation can save up to three lives and it is estimated the 98 donors, some of whom have given blood 100 times, have saved up to 23,925 people between them.
