Enfield Borough Council will receive £250,000 of lottery funding to help tackle childhood obesity by getting more young people into sport.

The council was one of 32 projects to get a part of the £5.1 million from the National Lottery’s Sport England Community Sport Activation Fund.

The fund is to support grassroots sport activity across the country and build on last year’s successful Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The council's projects include outreach work to counsel and motivate parents to lead healthier lifestyles, establishing a physical activity referral scheme for schools and doctors and introducing more sports programmes for disabled young people.

The first programme is due to begin in June and Councillor Bambos Charalambous, cabinet member for culture, leisure, youth and localism, said the council is committed to helping the most deprived.

He said: "This very welcome injection of Lottery money follows the theme of investing in getting our young people fit and healthy.

“We do this by targeting those who most need it, children and young people who suffer deprivation, those who need extra help to get fit and healthy and those with disabilities.”
