Dozens of police units were scrambled to Enfield Town this afternoon to prevent a mass end-of-term brawl between rival students.

Enfield Police sent in riot vans and numerous patrol cars, as well as the force’s helicopter, to deal with the gang of between 80 and 100 teenagers who gathered outside McDonald’s, in Church Street.

Scuffles broke out between police and the teenagers and one officer was reportedly left with a minor facial injury.

The Enfield Independent understands two arrests were made at the scene and officers are now reviewing CCTV footage from the area.

The cordon around the town centre has since been lifted.

Members of the town’s safer neighbourhood police team spotted the gathering crowd shortly after 3pm and called in support over fears of a pre-arranged fight.

The town centre was subsequently sealed off by police, who began to disperse the schoolchildren, who broke-up for half term this afternoon.

A small number became aggressive towards police and officers were forced to deal with what one eyewitness described as “a small amount of trouble”.

Twitter was awash with rumours of a double stabbing in the town centre as a result of the large police presence but the London Ambulance Service confirmed it was not called to the scene and the Met has not reported any injuries.

Witnesses described seeing dozens of officers moving through the town centre, which was brought to a standstill by the school gang.

Enfield Police tweeted on its official Twitter account just before 6.30pm: “Police were on scene in Enfield outside MacDonalds, after a number of school kids formed a crowd, the area has now been cleared. #EndofTerm.”
