The MP leading an area where a man was killed in a shooting last week says a planned increase in police officers should “reassure” the public.

A 34-year-old man, who is yet to be formally identified by police, was murdered in Fontaine Court in Southgate at approximately 7.20pm on Thursday.

The shooting happened less than three weeks after 19-year-old Mohammed Hussein was shot dead in Bounces Road in Edmonton, and just hours after a cashier in a betting shop in Green Lanes in Palmers Green was forced to hand over money in a robbery.

Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes, who lives in Southgate, said: “I was shocked and surprised about such an incident happening in Southgate. It looks like it had particular characteristics that didn’t seem like it was a random attack.

“However, any murder is appalling and abhorrent and we need to ensure that there is enough police about so the community can be reassured.”

Both victims this month were pronounced dead at the scene, with four people arrested in connection with Mr Hussein’s murder.

Police launched a murder investigation last week into the death of the man in Southgate, but no arrests have yet been made.

Mr Burrowes told the Enfield Independent he met with the deputy mayor for policing, Stephen Greenhalgh, on Thursday to ensure the borough will receive 85 new police officers by 2015 as promised in London mayor Boris Johnson’s crime and policing plan.

The Conservative politician said the serious crimes happening in Southgate and Palmers Green show that police presence is needed in all parts of the borough.

However, the mayor's plans also mean the daily front counter at Southgate Police Station in Chase Side will close - only opening three hours a week for "non-urgent face-to-face contact" between the public and police.

Winchmore Hill Police Station in Green Lanes was closed and the opening hours of Enfield Police Station in Baker Street were cut from opening 24 hours a day to just 40 hours a week.
