A pensioner tired of witnessing accidents outside his home is condemning the authorities for not installing temporary street lights during works at an accident black spot.

Ronald Hastings, who has lived in Weir Hall Avenue in Edmonton for 75 years, says the safety of pedestrians has not been taken seriously during a week of roadworks in nearby Empire Parade last week.

The 79-year-old said neighbours are outraged the already dangerous street – in which pedestrians have been killed by cars - has not been sufficiently lit while the works have been carried out.

He said: “I am not a busybody but I have seen so many accidents.

“I am just wondering why no temporary lights have been put in because this is a very dangerous piece of road.

“I would have thought it would be possible for the good of the community, it’s so dangerous."

Mr Hastings called the council urging officials to reconsider the works, but claims his concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

However, a statement from the council claimed Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for the works.

It said: “Enfield Council has no lighting points in Empire Parade.

"Empire Parade is a service road of the A10 and as such, is lit by the lamp columns maintained by Transport for London on the A10.

“Enfield does have units in Empire Avenue leading away from the A10 to the rear of the parade.”

The Enfield Independent is waiting for a comment from TfL.
