Learning the ropes from firemen has won a student an award.

Southgate College student Jemmel Cophen received a Jack Petchey Achievement Award for his hard work and focus during a fire fighting course.

After taking part in the Local Intervention Fire Education (LIFE) programme last year, 16-year-old Jemmel also wants to pursue a career as a firefighter.

His father Anthony said he and his wife Yvonne are “very proud” of Jemmel for receiving the award for his efforts.

The Edmonton teen received a framed certificate, a medal and £200, which he spent on tables and chairs for the passing out ceremony.

The intensive five-day course at at London Fire Brigade’s Southwark Training Centre teaches people aged between 13 and 17 fire fighting skills including using breathing apparatus, casualty rescue and hose line practise.

Awards were presented by London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson, who said: “Since it started in 2002 the Brigade’s LIFE scheme has helped to put the lives of thousands of young Londoners on the right track.

"This is my favourite event of the year when we recognise the achievements of young people who have taken part in the LIFE project.”
