Spirits high as eco-friendly Kingsmead School wins green flag award

Students’ spirits were sky high after they won an award for their efforts in looking after the environment.

Kingsmead School in Southbury Road was given one of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign's green flags, which are given to the greenest schools in Britain.

For the least two years, students have got involved in green campaigns including Recycling Tuesdays, where form groups win prizes for recycling the most rubbish.

The school cut its annual £100,000 heating and electricity bills by £25,000 in one year by encouraging people to turn off lights when not needed.

Students with sustainability on their minds also helped set up a vegetable garden and started a Keep Kingsmead Clean anti-litter campaign.

Henry Greenwood, maths teacher and sustainability co-ordinator at the secondary school, is very pleased it has been recognised for its efforts.

Over the coming weeks, the school hopes to replace its lights with more efficient LED bulbs to increase its green status even further.
