Family pulled to safety from Enfield Lock blaze

A little girl was dragged from a window to safety after a blaze took hold of her home on Saturday.

Fourteen firefighters were called to Ordnance Road in Enfield Lock at 4.05pm to save a child, a man a woman who were trapped inside a flat.

They found one of the adults waving a towel out of the window to attract their attention.

In a dramatic rescue mission, they pitched a ladder and rescued the child from the first floor window before leading the man and woman to safety from inside the propety. 

Dave Mills, watch manager from Enfield Red Watch, said: “Crews immediately pitched the ladder and rescued the child from the first floor window.

“Fortunately she wasn’t hurt so firefighters took her to a nearby shop whilst we dealt with the incident. Crews also led the two adults to safety from inside the home.

“Most of the fire had been extinguished by one of the residents, so firefighters damped it down and made sure it was safe, using a thermal imaging camera to check the fire was completely out.

“Firefighters did a fantastic job and dealt with the incident really quickly. The information from control officers proved invaluable in dealing with it so promptly.”

Despite their ordeal, the family escaped without injury.

The brigade’s 999 control officers gave the people inside the property fire survival advice until the fire crews arrived on scene.

Part of the staircase from the ground to the first floor was damaged by the fire, which was under control just after 4.20pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
