Transport for London gives Enfield Borough Council £200,000 to revamp Ponders End High Street

Plans to cut crime and improve transport in Ponders End are underway following a £200,000 grant from Transport for London.

Enfield Borough Council will use the cash to create a design for the regeneration of High Street as well as start a consultation over proposals.

The changes are planned make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to use High Street, and improve transport links between Queensway and High Street.

New measures to cut back on crime and anti-social behaviour, improve the bus service and the appearance of the area are also planned.

The authority, which hopes the changes will attract investment and businesses to the area, expects to receive an extra £1.8million by 2015 to deliver the regeneration.

The councils cabinet nember for environment, Councillor Chris Bond, said: "The rejuvenation of Ponders End is a major priority for Enfield Council and this money will help us improve links across the High Street and make it significantly easier for people to get around the area on foot, by bus or on their bikes.”

He said the council’s own investigations show that improving transport links can play a “major role” in improving town centres by attracting businesses and shoppers during tough economic times.

Councillor Del Goddard, cabinet member for business and regeneration said: "We are doing an incredible amount of work to regenerate Ponders End and this funding will help us develop an effective plan to make the area more accessible and attract businesses and customers to the town centre.”
