A housing chief has reaffirmed Enfield Borough Council’s interest in buying a former Royal British Legion club.

The social club in Holtwhites Hill in Chase Side was forced to close in November due to mounting debts, but the building itself is still owned by the Royal British Legion charity.

Councillor Andrew Stafford, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property, told the Enfield Independent the authority envisages the building could be rented back to the former servicemen who used the building before, or used as a school or for other community purposes.

Although he said the council is still in contact with the Royal British Legion, he said the charity has not given the authority “any indication” as to their plans for the building – or even if selling it is on the agenda.

Cllr Stafford added: “We have indicated that we would still be interested in making an offer. I am very interested in trying to get hold of that building.”

The Royal British Legion was unable to comment.
