Palmers Green led the way yesterday by being the first town centre in the borough to turn on its Christmas lights.

Dozens of pupils from Hazelwood Primary School, in Hazelwood Lane, created a festive mood by singing Christmas carols before the tree, in The Triangle, was illuminated with bright white lights at 3.30pm.

The Mayor of Enfield Councillor Kate Anolue and Enfield, Southgate MP David Burrowes joined the sing-song before lighting the display.

The mayor said: “It is lovely for the children. We talk about the economic crisis but at the same time the children want their lights. We must make them happy no matter what. It gives a Christmas atmosphere and it is lovely.

The Conservative MP said: “Palmers Green is the first for many things and it is the first in the borough for switching on the Christmas lights because we want people to come to Palmers Green for their Christmas shopping.”

Free mince pies were handed out to children and parents to spread a little festive cheer.
