A project to try and bring back shoppers to North Harrow to revive the high street has received a commendation from a panel of experts.

Harrow Council’s efforts to regenerate the area – which included introducing a monthly market, more parking, reducing planning regulations and Christmas lights – has coincided with a drop in vacant shops from 23 per cent in April to 13 per cent by the end of summer.

A panel of regeneration experts at Place West London selected the project as one of three in the capital to receive a commendation for its originality and effectiveness.

Councillor Keith Ferry, portfolio holder for regeneration said he was “delighted” that the council’s efforts had been recognised.

He added: “Since summer 2011 the council and traders have been working together to hold events, promote businesses and improve the look of North Harrow and these efforts are starting to bear fruit with improved footfall to the area.”
