Man jailed for three years for drugs offences

A 28-YEAR-OLD Southgate man has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for drugs offences and for being in possession of an imitation firearm following a routine stop by Enfield Safer Neighbourhoods officers.

Chrysostamos Panayi, of The Green, was stopped in a blue Citroen Saxo in October last year for a minor road traffic offence.

Officers noticed what appeared to be wraps of class A drugs in the driver's door pocket of the vehicle. A further search of the vehicle uncovered a can of pepper spray in the centre console and an air pistol under the drivers seat.

A further search of Panayi led to the recovery of more class A drugs, which were concealed in his underwear. After a full investigation, he was charged with several offences relating to drugs and firearms, the drugs having a street value of over £1,300.

On Friday, April 4, he pleaded guilty to Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, Possession of a prohibited weapon and Possession of an imitation firearm.

Detective Constable James Carter, from Edmonton CID, said: "This case began with a routine stop for a minor traffic offence and led to the recovery of drugs and firearms. It demonstrates that criminals can and will be caught when they least expect it."
