Mystery surrounds departure of Enfield Housing boss

MYSTERY surrounds the apparent departure of a senior boss at Enfield Homes.

Brendan Wells, director of technical and property services at Enfield Homes, was in charge of maintenance and development of all of the borough's housing, as well as overseeing repairs.

Council bosses have admitted Enfield Homes, which manages all council-owned housing in the borough, failed to gain its two-stars in an Audit Commission inspection in February.

Insiders say Mr Wells left his job about six weeks ago.

A spokeswoman for Enfield Homes however said: "Brendan Wells is still a employee of Enfield Homes."

But when the Independent rang Enfield Homes and asked to speak to Mr Wells, we were told, “I’m sorry but he no longer works for the organisation.”

Councillor Edward Smith, a director on the Enfield Homes board, said: "Negotiations are ongoing. The board has been briefed but there are legal implications and therefore it would not be appropriate for me or anybody else for that matter to comment further."

The Independent tried to contact Mr Wells through Enfield Homes but were told his details were confidential.

The implications of the organisation's failure to gain two-star status are the loss of £137 million, which would be made available under the Government's Decent Homes Programme.

The formal inspection result is expected to be published within the next fortnight.
