Personal Overview - Third time lucky for this new Member of Parliament, he contested unsuccessfully the Enfield North seat against former MP Joan Ryan in both 2001 and 2005. His retention as candidate was doubtful against the backdrop of his relative failure judged against the Conservative performance in neighbouring Enfield Southgate - a swing of 8.7% there in 2005 compared to only 0.6% in Enfield North. His local campaigning to date in the constituency has focused primarily on the NHS, particularly over plans to reorganise service provision away from the local Chase Farm Hospital. He has also highlighted the planning blight caused by development in the constituency where large population increases have not been matched by commensurate improvements in local social or transport infrastructure.
