SCOUTS from Haringey are preparing to fly to Sweden next week for a world meeting with thousands of others.

North London's contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in the city of Kristianstad includes four youngsters from the borough who have been working for 18 months to prepare for the trip.

Scouts David Ogufere, Xander Yesilirmak, Will Kenny and Louis Hodge will join more than 38,000 others to attend the two-week festival – which includes members from around the world and features hundreds of activities centred around the natural environment.

Cub Scout Leader Deborah Rush, who is leading the Greater London North Unit, said: “Preparing for this has been a true journey - there has been a lot of planning and hard work.

“We have had several training camps where the young people from all over the county have joined together to become a comprehensive team.

“The anticipation is growing and when we get to Sweden I just know it will be 100 times better. I’ve done some pretty fantastic things with Scouts since I became a leader but this tops the lot.”

The jamboree is held every four years and this event is the 22nd since Robert Baden-Powell was declared Chief Scout at the first meeting in Kensington in 1920.

Haringey Explorer Scout David Ogufere, 17, said: “This is a real opportunity for me to meet other young people from all over the world, to discover things about their culture and traditions and have fun with them. I just can’t wait to get there.”
