As the highest point of building work on the Edmonton Green makeover is reached, reporter PETER SHERLOCK finds out how co-operation between all interested parties is at the heart of the success so far.

An important milestone in the redevelopment of Edmonton Green has been reached.

A crowd gathered for a topping out' ceremony of the new leisure centre on Monday, marking the completion of the highest point of the building.

Representatives from Enfield Council joined developer St Modwen properties, and building firm Gleeson Building Ltd for the noon ceremony.

The revamp of Edmonton Green has gathered pace in the last year as St Modwen razed the ugly concrete car park to the ground and began work on the new shopping centre.

A modern 26-stand bus station will be completed by May next year and the new shopping concourse is on schedule to open next autumn.

The leisure centre is due to be handed over to Enfield Council in early 2007, along with a primary care centre and residential flats.

Council leader Mike Rye said: "Regeneration on this scale takes vision, imagination and determination if it is to succeed. But it also needs another ingredient co-operation.

"Co-operation between partners, council services and staff, and co-operation of the people who live and work in Edmonton Green."

Anthony Glossop, chairman of St Modwen, said: "We have reached a major milestone in the development of one of the first mixed-use schemes in London.

"The £100million project is on target and it is a tribute to the high level of co-operation and consultation we have enjoyed with Enfield Council and the housing association, Green Horizons."
