School pupil's Indian feast earns prize in cookery competition

AN Enfield school pupil has won a place in the regional finals of a healthy eating cookery competition on Saturday.

Jagjeet Bharth, of Chace Community School, impressed judges with his Indian-inspired menu called Rotary Surprise.

It is comprised of chicken curry served with cumin rice, mint and chilli yoghurt and chapatti - a traditional Indian flatbread.

For dessert he served top chefs, including The Ivy's Gary Lee, gulab juman and mango ice cream.

In accordance with the rules of the competition, organised by Rotary in London, the young chefs had a budget of just £15.

Shirley Kirk, Rotary in London youth opportunities chairman, said: "Young Chef is aimed at anyone who enjoys cooking or who wants to have a go - it's not just for experienced young cooks. It could be a stepping stone to a career in the food industry, but this is not the main aim of the competition. It is simply a good way for young people to have fun learning an important life skill."

"We hope these competitions will encourage more young people to eat well and grow up with a love of good, healthy food."

The regional final is due to take place on Saturday, March 19, at North Herts College, in Hitchin.
