I share the concern about the speed of traffic in World's End Lane in the vicinity of Grange Park School (Kids call for action to stop speeding motorists, Independent July 14) despite the introduction of traffic calming measures and a 20mph speed limit.
As one of the few motorists who observe this 20 mph speed limit, I have been overtaken on numerous occasions by others, apparently incapable of observing that limit themselves. This creates additional danger.
However, there is a concentration of school children in the vicinity for around three percent of the time, and for the remaining ninety-seven percent, few could reasonably complain of vehicle speeds of up to 30mph.
May I therefore suggest that Enfield Council restores the 30 mph limit and in order to slow traffic at times when school children are outside the school gates, it installs flashing time-operated signs incorporating 20mph maximum speed warnings, to encourage motorists to keep their speed down.
Because such signs are not aesthetically attractive, they could be made to retract into the ground when not in operation.
If a trial is found to be successful in World's End Lane, the council could introduce similar schemes elsewhere in the borough.
