ENFIELD has a new mayor, after Conservative councillor Lee Chamberlain assumed the post of the borough's first citizen.
He was handed the chain of office by his predecessor, Cllr Don Delman, at a mayor making ceremony at the Civic Centre on Wednesday.
In his first speech Cllr Chamberlain outlined his credentials, describing himself as a born and bred Enfieldian, and his appointment an "honour".
He said: "I'm grateful for the trust the council has shown. I will cherish the role and hold it up to the highest standards."
Cllr Chamberlain announced that the Nightingale Hospice, in Lancaster Road, will be his chosen mayoral charity.
The cancer charity is finding its feet after its premises suffered serious damage in a fire last year.
Some money will also go to the London Hospice.
The mayoralty is a ceremonial post and its holder's tenure is one year.
There is no rule forbidding Mayor Chamberlain from continuing to execute his duties as a representive of Southbury ward.
However, there is normally an informal agreement between mayor and his fellow ward councillors that they assume some of his workload so the first citizen may devote himself to the position.
This will see Chris Bond and Peter Fallat take up the mantle in Southgate.
At the same ceremony, Cllr John Jackson, who represents Bush Hill Park ward, was appointed deputy mayor.
