FOR me, a good Smashing Pumpkins song is like the fantastic moment at the end of a "coming of age" movie.

Delicate, almost eerie verses suddenly crashing into a belting chorus, making adrenaline flood through your system while your heart soars.

After a seven year gap, I was hoping for more from this album.

Zeitgeist's songs start with a crash and stay on the same level, never quite earning their impact.

There are catchy numbers here and moments which linger in your head but nothing to feel that life affirming swell in your heart that old time fans must be hoping for.

Generally the songs are above average, thoughtful, guitar crashing, toe-staring and durgy, turning at times into music you can close your eyes and mosh to.

I can't help thinking though, that the teenage fans who used to jump up and down to this stuff, are now grown up and probably feeling more angsty about their mortgages, glad to leave their hormones behind.

On the other hand, there's a chance that the Pumpkins could win over a few new fans with this album.

There are always kids out there who want something to mope to and this fits the bill, but there has to be something hollow in listening to someone nearly old enough to be your dad, trying to disaffect your youth.
