TEETERING between sounding like a poodle rock hangover and trying to ape the mid-70s New York no-wave, We Are Scientists are an acquired taste. To those in the know though, they are the business.
Which means there's a fair amount of anticipation surrounding this set of off-cuts, out-takes and b-sides. Opening gambit, Ram It Home had me grasping for the off switch though with its tired approximation of safe stadium rock. More appealing is the wanton electro of The Great Escape and a truly startling take on Sigur Ros' Hoppipolla.
The stripped-down Nobody Move Nobody Get Hurt is probably the highlight, though I have a perverse fondness for their attack on Art Brut's Bang Bang Rock 'n' Roll. The DVD's worth checking out too. A proper fans' package then.
