Enfield sprinter Desiree Henry believes she got the perfect preparation for the upcoming World Junior Championships by racing the globe’s finest at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix.

The 18-year-old was last week confirmed as part of the 46-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland team which will head out to Eugene, Oregon for the World Junior Championships from July 22-27.

A silver medallist in the 200m at the European Junior Championships last year, Henry warmed up for her trip to the United States by competing on the Commonwealth Games track at Hampden Park.

And she made sure to enjoy her own experience on the track; anchoring Britain’s A 4x100m relay team to victory and 24 hours later clocking 11.40 seconds to finish sixth in the 100m B race.

“I thought it was an absolutely fantastic race,” she said. “I got off to a good start. Maybe towards the end I was a bit too relaxed, but it’s great preparation for me, so I’m definitely happy. The track was fantastic, the weather was good too.

“I’m going to the World Junior championships in the States, so I was just happy that I got to have a little bit of an experience of the Commonwealth Games to an extent, in terms of competing in the stadium.

“This is my last year as a junior; there was a high-class field there, so I’m very happy and looking forward to that. A medal is in my mind at the world juniors and also to run fast, just two simple things, just keeping it straight forward.”

Henry was joined at the Sainsbury’s Glasgow Grand Prix by fellow Enfield athlete Sean Safo-Antwi who took part in the men’s 100m B race.

The 23-year-old clocked a time of 10.31 to finish fifth, and admitted he was eager to enjoy more experiences on the big stage.

“It was a decent run, I just wanted to get out there, get the run out of the way injury free so I’m happy with that,” he said.

“The stadium is massive and it was probably the biggest competition I’ve ever competed in my life but that’s what I want to do.

“I want to be out there with the best in the world, run with the best in the world. The times will come it’s not a problem.”
